After a few years of happy usage of the nokia 6021, with the calendar and messaging connected through BT and PC Suite to my laptop, I was recently in serious consideration of a switch to even more advanced phone. The main reason was accessibility of these devices, such as iPhone, nokia e75, etc.

I was thinking of integrated calendar (personal & working), notepad for writing instant thoughts when laptop is not available, and also a light-catching device (for ad-hoc photographs and clips).

I made a try with an iPhone–having one borrowed for a while. It was cool experience. But I did not get comfortable with the virtual keyboard though, especially for larger texts… And also I was surprised by its rather weak battery powers.

Then, I figured out I may be benefitting from having a company blackberry device! I ordered a blackberry 9000 bold and am using it for two weeks now. It brings all the calendar features, notepad writing and photo-device inside. The writing is a bit complicated as well –esp. in Czech, but I need to get used to it.

Now, look at the images below and make a guess what device these were taken with! It’s the blackberry. The camera is definitely not an SLR one, with light enough it makes for acceptable portaits. But these blurry shapes surprised me greatly.

Intensionally I am not telling any details on it. Hope you may like it as well.

krasny obrazky, informativni texty, propojeni s historii a osobnostmi, ktere jsou nejak se zahradou spjate. jde tam vyhledavat a jsou indikovany na googlemaps, takze se clovek orientuje, kde to je.

bych bral jako velkou inspiraci pri cestovani po evrope…

a taky myslim pekny dukaz toho, ze pocitace aspon k necemu jsou, ne?

Once again, we visited čerchov. This time we were there the whole family, Lucka, me and Bohdana. This Sunday an ‘outdoor’ mass was celebrated there, in Czech and German at once.

The weather was excellent all day. Bohdana was a bit nervous sitting in the pram all the way up. On the top then she enjoyed rambling around which nowadays is her most favourite activity. We managed also to attend the mass partly.

I got the camera with me as well but the occasions to take some snaps were rare. Not because of situations themselves, rather because I needed to take care of Bohdana. Sill, when waiting for two beers, I made it to shot the two additional shots of the two towers.

Even though I was not in fond of videotaping our child Bohdana, I must admit now that there is something about it.

The first thing that conviced me was that one is able to catch dimensions other than visuality in more sensible manner. I mean sounds, voices, speech, and also movements in time. With more or less average talent for photography, that I feel I am possessing, I do not think I am able to make this all through photography. And the movies might be the way to keep the current moments for later time.

It took me a while to get used to it. With camera photographying, you “just” find a view, composition, adjust the depth of field and time of the snap and shoot. I know even this is not easy when you aim to get valuable frame.

With the parents’ LUMIX, I made the first tries. And here are three initial lessons learned for me.

• First observation: do not take portrait-wise — the movie is really hard to edit with the other landscape snaps :)
• Second observation: do not take short snaps. When merged into a longer movie it does not provide comfortable view.
• Third observation: the ordinary situations may, at least for the involved, look interesting after a few months or years.

Now, I really consider buying a similar compact LUMIX that is able to take videos at approx. 700×500@30frames/s. And moreover in 16:9 format! Looking forward for that.

Dneska ráno jsem poslouchal ČRo3 Vltavu. A tam se bavili v pořadu Mozaika moderátor a hudební kritička. O hudebních akcích teď v nejbližších dnech, kdo přijede a co bude hrát a kde. A taky o tom, že VŠUP má teď novou znělku pro promoční procedury, která velmi hezky kombinuje moderní zvuk a moderní i tradiční kompozici. Spíš inspirující, než zajímavý.

V závěru ovšem sklouzli k pro mě mnohem zajímavější poznámce. Otázka moderátora zněla (zhruba):”Zda a proč se soudobá hudba obrací formou a například i místem produkce k ošklivosti?”. Vystupuje se v čističkách, továrnách, zrezivělých, zaprášených, zašmírovaných a zašedlých místech, hrají se zde komplikované skladby na hranici disonance. Hudební kritička vlastně potvrdila tuhle myšlenku nedávnou diskusí s nějakým Čechoameričanem — hudebním skladatelem, který nejradši koncerty v Ostravě s tím, že “tam přijedeš a tam nic není. Je to tam pustý a prázdný. Třeba v Praze už to všechno je, budovy, lidi jsou už nabitý!”

Shodou okolností čtu “Snuff” od Chucka Palahniuka (Klub rváčů, Zalknutí,…). A to je dost konkrétní ukázka, že nějaký hodnotný, byť komplikovaný, sdělení může najít velmi extrémní podobu. Asi víc rozdrcený a pozasunovaný v celým textu. Jasné, replikovatelné formy s nádechem patosu jsou pryč.

Ne až takovou shodou okolností čtu Zamrzlou evoluci od Jaroslava Flégra. Dělám to proto, abych se po letech modelování genetického algoritmu pro matematické optimalizace dozvěděl, jak to vlastně ještě lícuje s tou “evoluční realitou”. A v této knize se dozvídám, že je čím dál tím více jasné, že evoluční hra až tak úplně nesleduje fenotypy, nás, produkty života na Zemi, nýbrž že soupeření a funkce přežití se aplikuje nejspíš na úrovni genů, součástí našich kódů. Sobecké geny, které se snaží v rámci svého boje přežít, vůbec netuší, co se odehrává ve fenotypovém “makrosvětě”. A v obou úrovních asi existuje něco, co bychom vnímali jako krásné, hodnotné a zajímavé.

Krása našeho světa je ta ucelená, polokýčovitá, explicitní. Stromy, nebe, moře, da Vinci, Shakespeare, Mozart. A pak taky ta postmoderní, pokroucená, roztrhaná na pidlofrčičky. Geny, algebraické reprezentace, urychlovače, David Černý, Jáchym Topol, Michael Nyman, Yann Tiersen.

A asi to chce krásu vidět a hledat, protože ani jednu tuhle krásu nám nikdo do čumáků cpát nebude.

I went through folder with a bit outdated photographs.

I am especially happy I found the shots from “close things” series, as well as “city lights”. The lights, they were shot by my first camera, canon powershot. I simply placed the camera on the ground and snapped a few shots. Then, I remember the whole night I spent with the gimp manipulations.

Then the close things collection. The initial motivation was to identify and illustrate the ordinary things that surround us and also that provide us with comfort/pleasure/interests.

I snapped books, mobile phone, my clarinette, Lucka’s dog, as I remember. I picked the b/w outfit that allowed for higher contrast range applied without “colour” distortion.

after nearly three months, another MOV-to-FLV convert appears. I tried to re-use the commands I listed in previous post on video conversion.
I discovered that the -acodec option did not work and I had to update it. Then, I also added the bitrate option which enhances the quality of the final output.

The current version is as follows.

after a 4 hours of struggling I managed to put videos into wordpress posts.

seen at Lucka’s pages. of course, the videos concern Bohdana. the first one sketches Bohdana’s first non-breast-feeding experience, the second is just a short clip of Bohdana’s ordinary afternoons games (means buzzing on the floor cracking everything around…)

now, how I made all the things do.

1. find and install the flowplayer plugin. found here
2. install the flowplayer plugin according to its instructions
3. whenever you need a video, just put a ”

that’s simply it. now how to get the right video format so that the video is visible after loading the page.

here the 4 hours came of trial-error experiments. after these 4 hours I more or less by accident came across the magic commands. here we are. I hope this will be helpful.

I converted MOV files from panasonic LSXXX.note the double call of a mencoder and then a

mencoder -oac mp3lame -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:mbd=2:trell -of avi

this way encoded, the <file.flv> should be visible in the web-page in a flowplayer window.

further improvements will be reported.

v neděli ráno jsme s Pavlem vyrazili na focení inverze na čerchov. už v sobotu jsme viděli, že žádná inverze nebude, ale byli jsme zvědavý, jaký počasí bude a jestli nebude fotogenický.

děsný děsný vstávání. ale procházka potom výborná. nahoře, přímo u rozhledny, byl dost silnej vítr, takže jsme měli zkřehlý ruce.

Dora se přímo během focení nudila tak, jako vždycky. a protože tam byl vítr a zima, tak dělala, že je jí zima, a třásla se a klepala a pískala a citově vydírala.

celkově paráda. příště už ale musíme trefit tu inverzi.

vyzkoušel jsem po dlouhý době COKIN filtry, ND a gradual grey. s výsledkama jsem dost spokojenej. místy je moc citelnej ten gradual. a některý fotky jdou po zpracování trochu do fialova, i když v reálu po teplých barvách ani stopy. wtf?!

a tohle už jsou standardní televizní obrazovky z cesty dolů…
